How to Keep Your Underwear in Shape for as Long as Possible

Underwear is one of the most frequently worn items in your wardrobe—and one of the easiest to overlook when it comes to care. We wear it every day, wash it often, and expect it to stay soft, supportive, and comfortable. But even the best underwear can lose its shape if it’s not treated right. Here’s how to make your underwear last longer and keep its fit for as long as possible.
Start with Quality
A good fit begins with what you buy. High-quality materials—like cotton with a bit of spandex, modal, or merino wool—tend to hold their shape better than cheaper fabrics. Look for smooth, flexible seams and waistbands that feel firm but not tight. If it feels comfortable and supportive from the start, it’s more likely to stay that way after many washes.
Wash with Care
The biggest threat to your underwear’s shape is improper washing. Hot water, harsh detergents, and aggressive spin cycles can break down elastic fibers and cause stretching or sagging.
- Use cold or warm water – 86°F (30°C) or 104°F (40°C) is usually enough to get things clean. Only use hot water if you’re dealing with illness or heavy soiling.
- Use a mesh laundry bag – especially for bras or delicate lace pieces. It prevents tangling and stretching.
- Skip the fabric softener – it can coat and weaken elastic fibers, making them lose their snap.
- Choose a gentle cycle – shorter, slower cycles are easier on the fabric.
If you want to go the extra mile, hand-wash your underwear. It takes a few extra minutes but can significantly extend its lifespan.
Dry the Right Way
The dryer might be convenient, but it’s tough on underwear. High heat breaks down elastic and can cause shrinkage.
Instead, air-dry your underwear. Lay it flat on a towel or hang it on a drying rack out of direct sunlight. Sunlight can fade colors, and heat from radiators or vents can dry out fibers. If you must use a dryer, choose the lowest heat setting and a short cycle.
Store with Intention
How you store your underwear also affects its shape. Overstuffed drawers can stretch waistbands and crush molded cups.
Fold your underwear neatly and avoid cramming it into tight spaces. For bras, stack them with the cups facing the same direction rather than folding one cup into the other. Drawer dividers can help keep everything organized and easy to find without unnecessary tugging or stretching.
Rotate Your Sets
Even underwear needs a break. Wearing and washing the same few pairs repeatedly wears them out faster. By rotating several sets, you give the elastic time to recover between uses. This is especially important for sports underwear, which endures more sweat and stretching.
Watch for Signs of Wear
No matter how well you care for it, underwear won’t last forever. Keep an eye out for loose waistbands, stretched-out leg openings, or bras that no longer provide support. When you notice these signs, it’s time to replace them—not just for looks, but for comfort and hygiene too.
Small Habits, Big Difference
Keeping your underwear in shape doesn’t require major effort—just a few mindful habits. Wash gently, dry carefully, and store thoughtfully. These small steps will help your underwear last longer, feel better, and keep you comfortable every day.
